PARKINSON'S
WELLNESS PROGRAM
Parkinson's Wellness Programming
The goal of our Parkinson's Wellness Program is to enhance the quality of life of the participants and those that support and love them. The YMCA of Tuscaloosa has been offering Parkinson's-focused classes since 2018 and in 2022 expanded programming to also offer PWR! (Parkinson's Wellness Recovery). This expansion is designed to provide a wider range of physical activity movements to better meet the needs of all patients.
The exercises included during the classes consist of drills and movements to condition for:
-
Balance and agility
-
Muscular and Cardio vascular endurance
-
Hand-eye coordination
-
Footwork
-
Strength and flexibility
-
Enhanced mental focus and sharpness
All exercises are intended to enhance the perceived capabilities of the participant.
Studies indicate rigorous exercise, highlighting gross motor movement, balance, core strength, and rhythm, could improve range of motion, flexibility, posture, gait, and activities of daily living. Additionally, recent studies suggest certain exercises associated with rhythmic movements may be neuro-protective or have the ability to slow disease progression.
What to expect?
Classes are taught by a certified instructors. Classes offered are non-contact and intended to enable individuals with Parkinson's Disease to fight their disease and improve their quality of life. No boxing or exercise experience is necessary and people of all ages are invited to participate. Patients, both male and female, walking independently or not, range in age from mid-30’s to early 90s.
The one-hour classes consist of a warm-up, specific exercise protocols and a cool-down. The programming for each class follows a similar sequence, focuses on building strength, and targets overall disease maintenance.
